Portrait of Chris, a painter from Seattle, Washington

I was cruising along First Ave. toward the ferries when I ran into this group of young ragtag artists. Chris came to Seattle via Iowa and creates realistic paintings using oil. I took a portrait of Chris with a Pentax K20D and 18-55mm DA lens. ISO was 1600, F 7.0 shooting in avaialable light. The K20D is great for shooting in low light condition. Gallery lighting is incandescent and I got outdoor ambient light from the storefront windows.

San Francisco Graffiti Wall by Poesia

I was taking a break from my photo workshops and was walking on Polk St. to check out the San Francisco Blues Festival when I saw this wall on a small alley called Austin. The alley is between Van Ness & Polk St. I happen to meet this young and talented group of international graffiti artists from Japan, Canada, and two Americans. I really like this walk that the artist Poesia is working and I shot with with the Pentax K20D and 18-55mm lens in B/W mode using the blue filter, ISO 200, F11

Seattle Fish Head

My students and I were cruising around Pike’s Place Market in Seattle and we were experimenting with shooting closeup shots with a typical kit lens of 18-55mm lens. This was shot with Canon G11 in macro mode which is what I like with using Point and shoot cameras. With an APS DSRL camera you would need to use a 100 mm macro lens to get really close.

Here’s a photo I took to promote an indie file in San Diego called Cannibelles, a horror film about vampire women invading planet earth with their main objective in eliminating all the men but keeping the women alive as female vampires. I just had to put this image up here on my blog since twilight has been so popular lately. My Ukrainian friend Katya directed the film with Sarah producing. Too bad the film never finish.

Technical notes: I shot with a Canon 40D and 28-135mm Canon Lens. Lighting was from one Fresnel 1000K light and a special green gel.Makeup by Connie. Forgot the name of the actresses though.

I have completed the San Diego Photo Safari that I signed up for in Aug and had a very rewarding time. Elle did a great job of showing me the sights & provided me much information on taking better photos. It was a very good time and I do plan on booking another photo safari with him in the future. Thanks for making the arrangements.

Hi Elle! I just want to THANK you for such a great day! I just reviewed all of our shots and after explaining what the experiments were to my husband I realized how much we covered today. I really learned a lot about white balance which was such an interesting study with our night photographs. That was a function of my camera that I never even knew had such creative possibilities and can't wait to use it again. The observatory black and whites surprised me as it appeared on the LCD that there was more separation of the domes and sky but perhaps this was b/c the brightness setting gave us that impression? Hey Elle, thanks so much I had a great time today and I learned soooo much. You are a wonderful, patient instructor. I started out today feeling like a mute learning a new language, now at least I feel as is a few letters make a bit of sense, like A and S and ISO! ...Best, Susan

This is a must read article for all new students

Guys, please read up on the Triangle of Exposure prior to showing up at the class. This is the relationship between film speed, shutter speed, and aperture. Master this technical principle & you can operate any brand of cameras.Follow this link
